Dr. Champion considers herself a Phoenix rising from the ashes. At age 5, she tragically lost her mother to Lupus. Raised by her highly functioning alcoholic and career-oriented grandparents, who blamed her for her mother’s death, her environment was stressful. Food became her friend and her enemy.

Jennifer’s weight skyrocketed from 80 pounds in kindergarten, to 150 in junior high, to 250 in high school and all the way to 350 pounds in college. Diets, no matter how stringent, never worked and eventually she turned to binging and purging to try to keep her weight under control. Nothing worked and her family shamed and ridiculed her for being overweight.

At the age of 11, her grandmother had her first stroke, and Jennifer had to become her caretaker and assume the “typical woman” responsibilities for the household. Her family was deeply entrenched in their facade of perfection, desperately trying to cover up the truth behind the front door.

By the time she turned 15, Jennifer would again experience the loss of a family member; this time, her grandfather. Relieved but also blaming herself because she had often been told that she was the cause of their additional stress, she tried to take her own life. Fortunately, she didn’t succeed.

While in college, working to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Jennifer was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) and told she would never have a child. She was also identified as being on the Autism Spectrum. Devastated that she was so far from the perfection she strived for, she embarked upon a wild and dangerous path.

With time and healing, she decided to lose weight through healthy means, start putting herself first, and figure out how to work with her diagnoses instead of rebelling against it.

At age 28, she stepped into a gym for the first time. Little by little, the weight came off. Fourteen months later, with a lot of hard work, eating right, and working out, she lost 105 pounds. She felt amazing!

Shortly after, Dr. Champion found herself pregnant – against all the odds and in defiance of what her expensive endocrinologists told her. Her life would forever change at this moment because she knew that nutrition could truly change lives.

About a year after Jennifer’s son was born, her grandmother began having frequent strokes and seizures. Within the next year, the woman who raised her took her final breaths. As she watched her grandmother slowly fade away, Jennifer realized that she was brought here to help the women of this planet.

Her purpose, she realized, is to help others thrive, to find their health and their voice.

This was a pivotal point for her, and she moved from pursuing a Bachelor’s in Psychology to applying for a degree in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine.

Jennifer promised herself, in honor of her mother and grandmother- whom she missed dearly – that she would work to reach as many people as she could and help them become the women they are meant to be.

This passion eventually carried her through earning her Doctorate in Clinical Nutrition. Her dissertation and final research presentation were on PCOS.
